Bowl by Steve Macias -
Size
11" diameter
4.55" deep
Technique
This bowl was made on a pottery wheel and shaped with a wooden tool called a rib. The textured area on the exterior of the bowl was created with a metal tool called a chattering tool. Only the smooth surfaces of the bowl were glazed and the remainder was left untreated. The bowl is fired to 1,850° F and then placed into an air tight container with sawdust and newspaper. This procedure is called a reduction burn because the flames consume or reduce the oxygen in the container. This causes the flames to seek out the chemically bonded oxygen in the clay and glaze. The result is untreated clay becomes black from the reduction burn. The finished bowl is left with an interesting appearance in contrast between the glossy and matte areas and the contrast of the smooth and textured area.
Clay: White Stoneware
Glaze: Lustrous Copper
Fired: Raku, (oxidation burn - propane gas), (reduction burn - saw dust and newspaper)
This bowl is for decorative use only.

Large Bowl with Handles
Size
16.25" diameter
5.75" deep
Technique
This bowl was made on a pottery wheel and shaped with a large curved tool called a rib. Texture was added to the exterior of the bowl with a metal chattering tool. The recessed areas were cut and handles added after the clay was firm. A hand-carved, wooden stamp was used to attach the handles to the bowl and thus the texture of the stamp remained in the clay. A combination of glazes were used to create the stream of colors on the interior of the bowl. The term of art, for the result of combining glazes, is called breaks. For example, one might say, "Notice how the glaze breaks." Break is an unusual term since break is not a term we like to hear around ceramics.
Clay: White Stoneware
Glaze: Root Beer and Mars Red
Fired: Electric kiln, cone 6
This bowl is food, microwave, dishwasher, freezer, and oven safe.
