Dance of many Voices //180

ITEM #20

Dance of many Voices -

Artist Name: Sue K Gies

City/Town: Custer
State/Province: SD
Country: United States

Materials and Techniques: I used some hand dyed fabric, ornamental feathers, metal jewelry and my computer to print words on the fabric. I also printed out my label with my home computer and printer.

Artist's Statement: I chose this Native American dancer that represents voices in many diverse ways. Voices of culture, dance, spirit of the people, beautiful colors, music, and the beauty of the Native American costumes, which most likely were all handmade. I used appliqued process. I wanted to incorporate wording within the quilt, so I ironed colored hand dyed fabric onto freezer paper, then typed different phrases and printed them out onto the fabric. I then made those into the fringe of the dancer's quilt that look as like they are flying in the wind as she dances.

My Alzheimer's Voice 202//205

ITEM #23

My Alzheimer's Voice -

Award: Members' Choice: First Place Award Judge's Choice Award (Mark Lipinski)

Artist Name: Carol Poole

City/Town: Rockledge
State/Province: FL
Country: United States

Materials and Techniques: This quilt was made with hand dyed batiks and silk batting., using burned fabric and raw edge applique techniques. My inspiration was a painting that I saw, in 2015, by deceased artist, Mildred Thompson, while visiting Emory University's Michael C. Carlos Museum, in Atlanta. I manipulated the image several times on my computer, to achieve my desired effect. I then made a cartoon that divided my 16 x 16 size into 16, 4" x 4" squares, which made it easier for me to focus. I constructed each 4" block with what I wanted within that block, completing the 16, before beginning to sew them together, building 2 by 2, 4 by 4, then the 2 halves together. I used my seam ripper for something besides unsewing. I held the metal point over a candle until quite hot, then punched holes, to create the burned holes in my fabric, simulating the small burnt holes in my memories. Hand seed stitching helped create the movement within the quilt., using various thicknesses and colors of embroidery floss.

Artist's Statement: Having been diagnosed with early stage Alzheimers, I wanted to visually depict how my voice is changing. Once my thoughts, ideas and words were bright, quick, well-formed and easily articulated. They are becoming harder to express and even forgotten, at times, singed around the edges. The vortex expresses what my voice is and what my voice is becoming: less busy worked more reflective and thoughtful. I am slower to anger and am grateful of love.

Where Have All the Children Gone? 202//192

ITEM #39

Where Have All the Children Gone? -

Award: Members' Choice: Honorable Mention

Artist Name: Maude Wallace Haeger

City/Town: West Chester
State/Province: OH
Country: United States

Materials and Techniques: Cotton pieced with embroidered faces done with Aurifill thread. Drawings done by the artist and transferred to the piece by drawing on Solvey and then sewing over the Solvey using the darning foot so I could manipulate the piece as needed. There is a small amount of gold lame over one person as well. The inspiration for the people is from iconography.

Artist's Statement: The theme of Voices evokes speech of some type – or at least sound. Our country is undergoing some difficult times, as is the rest of the world. There are people in the world that have some beliefs I do not agree with. "Where Have all the Children Gone?" is specifically asking about the gay men of Chechnya who are being killed. These are young men who grew up in homes that surely must have loved them at one time. And now the parents are being told to kill those children because of their sexual orientation. Once a child is your child that child is always your child and should be protected and cared for even if a parent does not always agree with what the child has become, believes, or whatever... It can also be asking where have ALL the children gone?, as many children are battered or abused or have any number of things happen to them. Their voices of anguish should be heard. (Inspiration for title is Bob Dylan's song "The Answer is Blowing in the Wind") The statement above has been included on the label on the back of the quilt.

Beach Encounters -

Artist Name: Lisa Ellis

City/Town: Fiarfax
State/Province: VA
Country: United States

Materials and Techniques: Cotton fabrics, raw edge pieced.

Artist's Statement: For many people, piles of stones document a person's spiritual experiences in the wilderness. The Bible tells us that when ancient Hebrews experienced an encounter with God, they would build an altar by piling whole stones. As a sojourner came across a pile of these stones, he or she would be reminded that God was present. At my own beach house on the coast of California, this pile pf stones reminds me to be still and rest. The stones inspire me to let go go my to-do list, to enjoy God's creation, and to go to my studio and create new works of art.
