Inspired By Libby
Online Auction Benefiting Libby Lehman

Auction closes November 5th at 10:00 PM CST

A collection of quilts created by award winning artists and teachers Inspired By Libby Lehman herself or quilts she made.

Join us in a fundraiser of unique art to help aide Libby with her medical expenses. 100% of the money that is raised will go toward Libby.

This collection of unique quilts will be on display at the International Quilt Show Market and Festival in Houston from October 25 through November 2. After the quilts have finished with this showing they will go to a personal visit with Libby. She viewed many of them previously, but more need to be shared. In April of 2015 the collection will be shown at American Quilter’s Society Show in Paducah. After that they will be shipped to their new owners. The only quilts that will be shipped to their new owner immediately is a silent auction quilt by Clara Lawrence that will be up for bid at the Houston show and Catherine Anthony’s (Libby’s Mom) three quilts in this auction.

Inspired by Libby Lehman's "Caribe II". This quilt was inspired by Libby Lehman's quilt, "Caribe II". The hand-dyed background fabric symbolizes the unpredictability of life just as the technique itself (low immersion dying) is unpredictable - you never know what the end result will be. The leaves in the foreground, by contrast, represent the different aspects of life; the orange leaf is the joy we experience, the purple is the various hardships we encounter, and the green is the hope we carry through it all for a brighter future.

My Picture Image Machine Appliqué process. Machine appliquéd, extensive thread embellishing, and then machine quilted on a home sewing machine

Design Inspiration:

Inspired by Libby Lehman's quilt designs as she includes lots of triangles and thread play. I played and played with ideas for my piece for the Inspired by Libby Lehman Invitational. I love all kinds of threads- having gotten my first taste of them in a class long ago with Libby. Finally, to jump-start my design, I chose the triangle shape and the "square in a square" layout. Highlighting my own style, I used my signature 3-D process of creating a quilted whole cloth background, embellishing it with my machine appliqué for the quilted shapes and lots of sparkly bobbin drawing. Inspired by Libby Invitational.

Quilt Artist:

Susan Carlson

Name of Quilt:

Radius

Size of Quilt:

30” X 30” Quilt

Materials:

Cotton fabrics, thread

Techniques:

Fabric collage and free motion machine quilting

Design Inspiration:

Inspired by Libby Lehman. In this quilt, Radius, I wanted to reflect Libby's radiant personality, ready smile, and infectious humor. I can't say that I know her, our teaching paths have rarely crossed, but I had the distinct pleasure to be in the audience at one of her lectures. She had us laughing with her quick wit and wowed us with her knowledge and control of her quilting art. I was robbed of the chance to spend some time with her when she fell ill just a few months before we both would have been teaching in New Zealand. I can't even imagine how her presence would have added to that experience. So when I was asked to be a part of the Inspired by Libby group of quilters, I have to say I was inspired as much by Libby herself as by her stunning quilts. Libby's Radiant Circles quilts and her quilts of multi-colored undulating leaves are well known and loved. I happen to love both circles and leaves, representing cycles of life and growth, and both have been employed liberally throughout this quilt. The sun design is one I developed for my Serendipity Quilts book. There's a bit of a yellow rose in the cheeks, a wave to her home state of Texas and to that lovely southern accent of hers. The background is filled with spirals, both in fabric choice and quilting design. The spiral is a symbol of a new beginning, which Libby is facing with courage and determination. I chose the title, Radius, to represent how Libby is a center in a wide circle of quilters. I'm honored to be a part of this group, and hope that my quilt does its part in helping support Libby's ongoing recovery. Sun design from my book, Serendipity Quilts.

Cherrie Hampton

Name of Quilt:

Dancing With The Storm

Size of Quilt:

30” X 30” Quilt

Materials:

Cotton sateen, commercial cotton

Techniques:

Machine appliqué, hand painted butterflies

Design Inspiration:

Inspired by Sky Ribbons by Libby Lehman. I have always admired the effervescent lady who loves color. Libby was the first person who taught me about thread and how to use it in innovative ways. She directed my journey toward art quilting with her loose designs that were full of movement and boisterous color. Although I have never taken a class with her, she has had a strong influence on my understanding of movement and texture in quilt design. Her iconic book "Thread Play" is still a favorite reference book in my library.

Statement:

Last year when I was beginning the quilting for my first art quilt for show, I remembered her flowing forms and pulled out her book once again to study those designs. Her quilt "Sky Ribbons" provided the perfect expression for my quilt and that quilt went on to win a blue ribbon in Paducah and "The Future of Quilting" award in Houston.

To create "Dancing with the Storm", the "Sky Ribbons" again inspired me to indicate the movement of air. I chose butterflies following the twisting ribbons to reflect hope intertwining with the many twists and turns of life. This seemingly lighthearted image is juxtaposed against a mottled dark hand dye illustrating the storms that also effect life.

Size of Quilt:

Materials:

Cotton fabrics, cotton, rayon and synthetic threads, cotton batting

Techniques:

Bonded appliqué, strip piecing, machine quilting and embroidery

Design Inspiration:

Inspired by Libby's "Crop Circles" quilt, and an expression of my friendship with Libby, her accomplishments and memories of happier times. I chose Libby's "Crop Circles" quilt and I envisioned a garden for my (mostly round) circles because knowing Libby is like being in a garden, overflowing with an abundance of color, surrounded by lush green foliage, Libby's favorite color. As many different flowers grow in her garden as she has attributes - her brilliance, her bright smile, her abundant talent, her generosity in sharing her skills, her humor, her friendship - all attributes we have had the privilege of experiencing from Libby over the years, and more recently her courage, her strong determination, her fierce will = all as varied and intense as the flowers in Libby's special garden. May it bring as much joy as she has brought to all of us.

Materials:

Techniques:

Free-motion quilting

Design Inspiration:

Inspired by Libby Lehman, Ohio Star block. This quilt was a labor of love and was inspired by the work of Libby Lehman. I wanted to have the quilt be a gradual hot sun that we sometimes see as red when there is smoke in the air from fires in the summers. The red then becomes a brilliant orange and yellow sun that we are blessed to have each day. Because I sketched this out on paper first, I wanted to have the quilting look like I was sketching it out. This explains the thick quilting lines around each main design element of the quilt.

Techniques:

Machined pieced and appliquéd. Sheer ribbon illusion and couching with Razzle Dazzle on both back and front of quilt. Machine quilted on domestic machine.

Design Inspiration:

Inspired by Libby's quilt "Escapades". The design and the name for my quilt were derived from what Libby Lehman means to me and to thousands of quilters around the world.

"Radiance" is a measure of the quantity of radiation that passes through or is emitted from a surface.

Through Libby's teachings, she emits power and energy to others. She passes this energy on to her students, to create beautiful works of art. Libby's "radiance" has touched so many.

Radiance is measured by "joules". The stronger the radiance, the more joules of energy and power are emitted. Libby, you are a very strong and powerful source of radiance.

My quilt is a tribute to Libby Lehman, a powerhouse of creativity, emitting mega volts of energy to the quilting industry.

You are a jewel and we adore you!!!!

Name of Quilt:

For Love of Libby

Size of Quilt:

30” X 30” Quilt

Materials:

Machine and perle cotton embroidery threads, bamboo and organic cotton batting. Backing fabrics include one large Lunn Fabrics tie dye panel.

Techniques:

Whole cloth painting. Freehand drawing and most writing made with airpen, using black fabric paint. Colored with fabric paints and regular brushes. Mostly machine sewn. White cotton, fabric paint.

Design Inspiration:

Libby Lehman's self portrait with spools of thread springing out of her head. I don't know the actual title. I made "For Love of Libby" for the group project "Inspired by Libby," created and curated by Clara Lawrence, as a tribute to Libby Lehman, probably the most amazing person in art quilting today, who went through an aneurysm and major stroke in the Spring of 2013, and for whose continuing medical bills this project plans to aid.

I got my favorite dog ever in 2010 when I turned 60, and named her after my local friend Libby Bruch, who had died earlier that year. I hoped that my Libby would have this Libby's personality, which was amazing. At Art Quilt Tahoe in November, 2012, I told Libby Lehman that I was hereby retro-naming my dog Libby also after HER, because she has amazed me more and more over the years we've known each other and taught at the same symposia.

So my piece "For Love of Libby" is about all three of these Libbys, but mostly about Libby Lehman, singing her praises for being such a kind, helpful, brilliant, tireless, and sweet person, artist, and teacher.

The piece of Libby Lehman's that I used for inspiration for my piece is her little self portrait that has spools of thread springing out of her head, as if sewing is all she can think of! Thread and colors and Thread play (the name she gave her website, book, etc.)

I drew all three Libby’s in my painting, along with me standing with them. I wrote stories on the piece, after I painted it in Libby colors of lime green, orange, and other bright colors she loves. Some of the stories are mine about the three Libbys, and I also did some research on Libby Lehman's life, which I wrote about on the piece, as well.

Design Inspiration:

Inspired by Multiple quilts by Libby. This quilt was inspired by Libby's exuberance, and her love of bright colors. These colors are very different from my usual choices, and were quite a stretch for me! Circles are a frequent design in her quilts, so I included those. The quilted flower ribbons weaving through the circles are my interpretation of Libby's famous Thread play ribbons. The background fill quilting is done in a loopy design that Libby used often. Many of my quilts feature machine-embroidered free-standing lace, so I edged the quilt with lace. Inspired by Libby Lehman's "Crossfire". I first discovered Libby Lehman on TheQuiltShow.com. I could tell she was a pretty big deal, so when I saw her name as one of the judges in the very first Houston show I entered, I was THRILLED! I won first place with a small embellished quilt called, Alphabet Alchemy. Libby had written on the judge's sheet, "I LOVE this quilt!" Oh my gosh! THE Libby Lehman loves my quilt! I then had the privilege of taking a class from her a couple years later, and she was SO talented, SO amusing, and SO genuine. I was honored when Clara asked me to make a quilt for this exhibit/auction to benefit Libby. I used Libby's quilt, Crossfire as my inspiration. She has an amazing way with color. The solids I used are all hand dyed fabrics from my friend, Gilbert Muniz. I have a reputation for my alphabet quilts, and I think Libby would appreciate the letters and a few embellishments sprinkled over my quilt!
