Boro, Japanese for ragged, the technique of layering hand stitched textiles to make a patchwork repair.  Layers, boro stitching, patchwork, embroidery.  Traditionally, the beautiful arrangement of patches and mending stitches is borne of necessity. Using blue everyday fabric, the artist keeps true to the soul of boro, while elevating this work to fine art .  Red braided metal ribbon accents the simple materials.

Llamas!  Holy, moly - Llamas and plenty of tassels are featured in this wet and dry felted, wool panel on wool flannel background.  These Andean creatures can be right at home with you!  Richly colored background with natural wool felting.

Bright pink, yellow and green on black background.  This hand felted wool panel of original design evokes the Guatemalan culture.  Recently a glyph of a llama was discovered at a Mayan ruin in the jungles of Guatemala.  Llamas can be found throughout Central and South America.  Felted wool.

Strong sunflowers are recognized worldwide for their beauty and as a source of food.  Both its seeds and oil are consumable.  This original design by Jules Rushing incorporates her unique hand dyed fabrics.  The flower itself is raw edge applique, with thread painted details.  Machine quilting and hand beading round out this lovely artwork.

Artist Daphne Huffman turns her keen eye to fabric detail, using Carole Ann Waugh's "Stitch & Slash" technique.  Four cotton batik fabrics are layered, stitched together, then cut away, layer by layer. Revealed is a wonderful new pattern.  Machine quilting, cotton batik fabric, metallic thread.

Enter the vortex and enjoy as Daphne Huffman creates another panel in her series using Carol Ann Waugh's "Stitch & Slash" technique.  Lining up four different fabrics (batiks are wonderful!), stitching together, cutting away layer by layer, to reveal a variant pattern not seen previously.

Harsh difficulties are faced by Native Americans every day.  Forced off their lands, away from ancient hunting grounds and onto reservations.  Depicted here is one such individual as he reaches his End of the Trail.  Nez Pearce Chief Joseph said, "Treat all men alike. Give them the same laws. Give them all an even chance to live and grow. All men were made by the same great spirit chief. They are all brothers.  The earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it."

100% obtainium.  What's obtainium?  Well, according to the online dictionary, it's "materials used to create art work such as assemblage, mixed media, or sculpture that wasn't bought new, but obtained in other ways, such as second-hand, dumpster diving, chance findings, or donations."  Beth creates art from things that others throw away.  She calls this Obtainium Art.  In Japanese, the frog kaeru and return kaeru are the same.  When someone you love travels, make sure they have a frog with them! That way, they will return safely.

Deep hues and plush fabrics make up this mixed media collage, giving this sweet angel the royal treatment.  Obtainium from our lace event in March, plus trim gathered during the purge event comprise the main elements in the work.  Hand beading and a die cut angel complete the panel.

As Autumn takes hold and days grow shorter, we embrace the coolness in the air after a long sultry summer.  Soon snow will fall and chilly days will make us nostalgic for the months just past, and eager for those soon to come.  This study of a spring tree in its last stages of bloom gives up hope to look forward to.  As each season passes, there will be beauty in the one to come.  The woven tree panel and sidelights were from a sample book brought to a meeting.  Even the velvet backing was a piece of obtainium, gleaned from the purge tables and put aside for another time.  A myriad of button, beads and sequins round out this pastel gem.
